Early Private Banks, up to 1754. An age of merchant bankers
Before 1754 anyone could engage in banking activity, regardless of their other business activities. Two general kinds of banking emerged, based around merchant economic activity and based on the remittance of rent to landlords.
Dublin and Cork emerged as early centres of banking, with the first banking businesses being established in the two cities. La Touche was one of the most successful of the Dublin banks, with Pike's bank being one of the more successful Cork. Both operated for many decades.
Very few examples of banknotes issued prior to 1754 have been seen.
