In the period 1976 to 1982 The Central Bank of Ireland replaced the A Series banknotes with the new Series B banknote design.
The main reasons given by the Central Bank of Ireland for the new design were to modernise the look of the currency, making the notes smaller, and to make banknotes more secure and difficult to forge by incorporating state of the art security features.
The first denomination of the new Series B banknotes to enter circulation was the Scotus portrait £5 note in 1976. The series was completed with the introduction of the Carolan £50 note in 1982.
A Series B £100 note, featuring the portrait of Grace O'Malley, was also to be a part of the series, but the development of the note was cancelled in 1987 shortly before production.
