The first new issue of banknotes commenced in 1928. A Series Legal Tender Notes, were issued in seven denominations, 10 Shillings (half of £1), £1, £5, £10, £20, £50, £100. Each of the denominations appeared with the first date of issue, 10.9.28.
Type 1 Legal Tender Notes bore a fractional prefix and were all dated 1928. The 10 Shilling, £1, and £5 notes were also issued with a second date 23.10.28.
The basic design of the notes remained the same until the withdrawal of the series after 1977.
With parity of value between the British Pound Sterling and the Irish Pound, Northern Ireland notes of the Joint Stock banks and Bank of England notes continued to circulate in the Irish Free State and its successor, the Republic of Ireland.
